The
next time you travel, you can find a local birder who will show
you around. You can also meet traveling birders who are interested
in your area. Connect with a local birder who knows the local
hot spots and have a great time birding. Birdingpal.org
If
you are interested in birdwatching, you can do several things to encourage
birds to make an appearance around your house. One is to make a birdbath
available in your backyard. Be sure to maintain its cleanliness.
Also, if they have slippery edges due to glazing or glossy finishes, they
may not be the best option. Choose a shallow birdbath and to make it easier
for birds to perch, you can even put a couple of stones or branches in the
water so they have something to stand on while taking their bath.
You can also provide roost boxes (not the same thing as next boxes) for
birds to stay overnight. A good roost box will have multiple perches for
the birds to cling to. Keep the box clean but do not use any harsh chemicals.
Finally, you can provide nest materials to encourage feathered friends to
set-up home sweet home somewhere near your house. Birds keep their nests
as clean as any commercial
cleaning company maintains an office so make a
couple of piles available in the backyard of items such as dead twigs and
leaves, yarn, string, horse hair, pine needles, even thin cloth pieces.
These items can also be placed in empty wire suet containers. Not sure if
birdwatching is for you?
